Beck Wood Volunteer Litter Pick
A huge thank you to the eight volunteers who gave up their time on Saturday, 15th August to help with a litter pick at Beck Wood.
In just over an hour, an impressive 18 bags of litter, together with a further three large bags that had been discarded into the undergrowth had been collected. A significant amount of litter had been tucked away in the undergrowth and would otherwise have been difficult to see.
This was very much a deep clean and we hope that with everyone’s help it will not be something that needs to be repeated too often.
We know that a number of residents regularly pick up litter when they are out enjoying Beck Wood and the Parish Council is very grateful for the care and pride that people take in looking after this special part of our community.
There are a couple of gentle reminders we would also like to share.
With the recent dry conditions and the Government’s warnings about the risk of wildfires, please do not light barbecues, fires or anything else that could create sparks or flames at Beck Wood. Even a small source of ignition can have serious consequences in these conditions. Glass bottles should also always be taken home or placed in a bin rather than left in the woodland or undergrowth.
We have also received a number of concerns about dog waste. Please remember to pick up after your dog and take the bag home with you or use an appropriate bin. Sadly, bags of dog waste are sometimes being left or thrown into the undergrowth which creates an unpleasant environment for everyone and can be harmful to wildlife.
The Parish Council is also aware of the increasing number of day visitors coming to the Beck from outside the local area, particularly during warm and sunny weather. Great concern has been expressed about the impact of larger numbers of visitors, including litter, parking difficulties and anti-social behaviour.
The Parish Council recognises the concerns being raised by local residents and is working with the relevant authorities and agencies to try to address these issues. We will continue to monitor while we explore appropriate measures to help protect Beck Wood and the surrounding area for the benefit of both residents and responsible visitors.
Most local residents who visit Beck Wood do so responsibly and with consideration for others. By working together, we can help keep it a clean, safe and enjoyable place for everyone – walkers, families, dog owners and wildlife alike.
